There are a lot of options out there in terms of medications you can use in order to help you deal with wakefulness problems. The thing is that people like to focus on medications they at least are somewhat aware of. Nuvigil and Modafinil are two of the more well known medications you can be using in order to get treatment for any number of different wakefulness conditions. Is there one that’s better than the other though? Are there differences between the two that would make a person want to use one more than the other?
First let us get into what each of these medications is designed to do in short order.
Nuvigil – The generic name for Nuvigil is Armodafinil. It’s a wakefulness medication that works for people who suffer from specific wakefulness problems with the main one being Narcolepsy.
Provigil – The generic name for Provigil is Modafinil and it’s also a wakefulness agent. It can be used to treat specific wakefulness conditions, but it can also serve to promote better concentration and focus.
In terms of what each does as you can see by the short description above, there really isn’t much of a difference. So does this mean it doesn’t really matter which one you take? Well the answer is no. We can go over quickly a few reasons why a doctor might decide to prescribe you one of these medications over the other.
- Even though these two medications are the same in terms of what they can do, each one doesn’t contain exactly the same ingredients. For these reasons there’s a chance that a person can have a different reaction to one over the other. Most of this might come in the form of allergic reactions. In most cases there shouldn’t be an issue.
- Provigil is better known and because of this there’s a higher chance that a doctor will feel comfortable prescribing it over Nuvigil. Nuvigil is also a brand name, but it isn’t considered to be as popular as the other option. The benefit that comes with this is that the brand name versions of each medication might be different in terms of cost. Nuvigil might prove to be less expensive.
- Due to Provigil being more widely used than its counterpart, there’s likely more information available about it in terms of feedback from patients. This enables doctors to get a good feel for how patients are responding and it enables them to make changes as needed. Nuvigil has a lot of patient feedback as well, but not to the same degree as Provigil.
If both of these medications do the same thing is there any real benefit to using one over the other besides one being a better known product? We would say that each one is comparable, but it’s going to depend on the person. The composition of these drugs compared with whether or not someone has used one in the past will make a difference. It’s also important to note other medications a person might be using. Users might find one comes with an increased risk of side effects and the other a lesser risk.
